William C. Cobb is the Managing Partner of the Cobb Consulting ❖ WCCI Inc. based in Houston, Texas.  Mr. Cobb has been a consultant in strategic issues affecting professional service organizations since January 1, 1978.  Mr. Cobb provides counsel to improve the competitive position of his clients.  That counseling includes the assessment of the impact of trends in the market; growth strategies and mergers; pricing services and alternative billing; practice management; firm governance and structure; partner review, evaluation, and compensation; and similar subjects of critical importance to law firm and legal department leadership.  Cobb Consulting has more than 500 continuing consulting relationships with clients in 90 metropolitan areas of the United States, Canada, and England. In the early 1990's, Mr. Cobb's client base was extended into Central Europe, South America and the Far East.  Prior to starting his consulting practice in 1978, he was Executive Director of Bracewell and Patterson, a major regional law firm, and immediately prior to that, Management Consultant with the CPA firm Touche, Ross & Company (now Deloitte & Touche).

 

Mr. Cobb is a frequent speaker and writer on the critical issues of law firm and corporate legal department leadership.  Mr. Cobb has often spoken and written for such organizations as the American Bar Association, Law Practice Management Section of the ABA, International Bar Association, Union International des Avocats, Practising Law Institute, Canadian Bar Association, Law Society of London, Institute of Law Firm Management, Association of Legal Administrators, National Association of Law Firm Marketing, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, and other international law firm organizations.

 

In 1978, the American Bar Association published Mr. Cobb's book, A Planning Workbook for Law Firm Management.  The second edition was published in February of 1985.  He has been an author of chapters in other books such as Beyond the Billable Hour, Withdrawal, Retirement & Disputes, Win-Win Billing Strategies, The Lawyer's Handbook, and the PLI Management Series.

As a contributing volunteer to the ABA's Law Practice Management Section, Mr. Cobb was Chair of the Futurist Committee supporting the 1997 and 1999 Seize the Future Conferences for selected leaders of the profession, has served as chair of the Long Range Planning Committee, and served on the Beyond the Breaking Point and the Alternative Billing Task Forces.  He is often quoted by the national press on issues relating to vital law firm and corporate law group issues, mergers, alternative billing, partner compensation, and similar matters.  Mr. Cobb has served on the Board of Directors of the Downtown Houston Association and is past chair of the historic Houston Club's Membership Committee.

 

Mr. Cobb received his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Texas in Austin in 1966 and his Masters degree in Business Administration from Ohio State University in 1970.  He is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Texas and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
